So I have this friend, right? She's a therapist and a psi of some sort, I think able to identify mutant brainwaves or something with no practical use unless you're a megalomaniac. Anyway, she's trying to start up some kind of national mutant youth runaway helpline, and she's in Arizona now and she thinks something funny is going on. A boy of Mexican descent ran away and she's trying to reunite him with his family, and when she went to visit them, apparently his sister had just poofed and disappeared. Not long after he'd run away. Definitely not the boy, though, because he just turns his skin to sandpaper. (Eww? Also, cool.) And the girl is too young to have manifested. And when my friend asked around, she found out a couple other kids in the neighborhood have also vanished.

I'd told her some about our kidnapping case last summer, so she called me and asked me to help her out. So. Help her out. Doug, you read anything suspicious lately? Any bad guys on the move who like 'em young and Latino? Or maybe immigration is pulling a secret Elian? This is the American side of the border; people vanish from the other side to here, but not the other way around. Not without compunction, anyway.

Honestly, can a girl get through one date without crazies coming out of the walls? Sofia and I were in the process of being stuffed silly by Mama Lupe (Doug, everyone says hello and they did send food for you back with us) when one of her relatives came screaming out of the kitchen.

Literally.

Sofia translated what he was saying as the staff tried to get him to settle down. Mark, darling? You know that friend that was mentioning all the disappearances? Well, she's not the only one talking. This gentleman came from around the border of Arizona and Mexico and is now claiming that someone is grabbing people.

He thinks it's a program--government or military--and they're going after these people on purpose, something about coming from underneath them. I am not sure, he was pretty out of it. I do not think he had been up here for very long and I do not think he rested much while he fled.

It certainly made for an interesting dinner and we did get food pushed at us despite everything. Any thoughts, ideas? On the disappearances, not on my dinner.
