So I have this friend, right? She's a therapist and a psi of some sort, I think able to identify mutant brainwaves or something with no practical use unless you're a megalomaniac. Anyway, she's trying to start up some kind of national mutant youth runaway helpline, and she's in Arizona now and she thinks something funny is going on. A boy of Mexican descent ran away and she's trying to reunite him with his family, and when she went to visit them, apparently his sister had just poofed and disappeared. Not long after he'd run away. Definitely not the boy, though, because he just turns his skin to sandpaper. (Eww? Also, cool.) And the girl is too young to have manifested. And when my friend asked around, she found out a couple other kids in the neighborhood have also vanished.

I'd told her some about our kidnapping case last summer, so she called me and asked me to help her out. So. Help her out. Doug, you read anything suspicious lately? Any bad guys on the move who like 'em young and Latino? Or maybe immigration is pulling a secret Elian? This is the American side of the border; people vanish from the other side to here, but not the other way around. Not without compunction, anyway.

Hmm, nothing in the area suggesting a cult of the 'sacrifice young virgins' type, but the last time we had disappearing kids, it turned out to be demons, so I won't write it off as non-occult just yet. I'll keep poking around, see what I can find on the 'Net.

Yeah, I wasn't getting anything off my mutant contacts in that area, and even in rural areas they're usually pretty on the ball. But now with this news from Wanda and Sof, I think they might be off.

See my comment to Wanda. There was an article about this in one of my daily tabloids. And from one of the more reputable writers, to boot.
