He had something happen with his powers. He left Muir because he thought it would be safer for his sister and Nate's wife if he did. He figured he could handle it on his own. When he left he went to Laval, spent his time drunk fucking anything that looked like a good idea while he was. When he was sober enough to realize he couldn't handle the powers thing on his own he came back to ask for Xavier's help. He's just waiting to hear back from the Professor and he'll be back at the mansion.

I assume Moira can verify the powers stuff pretty easily.

And he's Jean-Paul, not a shapeshifter.
